READ THOROUGHLY BEFORE INSTALLING
OVERVIEW
This product was designed from the ground up to be the most efficient and reliable flood lighting product on the market. Please read and understand all installation
instruction prior to installing. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact your local agent or Carolina High Mast for clarification.
UNPACKING
The UltaSpot ships preassembled in one shipping package. The package is
designed to minimize risk of damage to the luminaire during shipping and
handling. It is recommended that the UltaSpot is not removed from the
packaging unless it is to be immediately mounted on the support structure.
Each package contains an exterior label that identifies the wattage and
lighting distribution. In preaiming lighting systems, each package also
uniquely identifies the appropriate tower and cross arm location.
WARNING: Removing the fixture from the packaging and setting on the
ground could damage the glass or exterior finish. Care should be taken to
protect the unit if it is to be removed from the packaging and not
immediately bolted to the support structure.
INSTALLATION
A.
MOUNTING
The flood light is provided with a heavy duty mounting trunion. The
mounting trunion has clearance for a ¾" main attachment bolt. Raise
the luminaire into position and attached the main ¾" trunion bolt.
Snug tight the main bolt to hold the luminaire in place. The luminaire
shall be adjusted to the proper left-right aiming angle by rotating the
luminaire on the main trunion bolt. Once the proper left-right aiming
angle has been achieved, tighten the main trunion bolt to 80-90 ft*lb
of torque. NOTE: Refer to aiming instructions for additional details
on proper aiming procedure.
B.
WIRING
Make all connections in accordance with the National Electric Code
and any applicable local code requirements. Verify that the supplied
voltage (as marked on the luminaire packaging) matches the supply
voltage to the lighting unit. NOTE: If the luminaire is supplied with
an optional Brad Harrison style connector, skip this step.
a.
Remove the rear ballast cover by removing the (4) #10
screws
b.
The luminaire includes a weather tight cord grip in the
lower portion of the ballast housing. It is recommended
that the luminaire be wired with a minimum 16/3
SEOOW (90C+ rating). The cord grip may need to be
loosened to ensure the cable easily slides into the ballast
housing.
c.
The ballast is factory prewired for the desired site
voltage. Three wires include an electrical butt-splice.
The leads are covered in a high temperature protective
fiberglass cover. Push back the coating to access the
butt splice as needed. Using a cable crimp tool, match
the color code of the incoming 16/3 to the supplied
wires (Black/White/Green). WARNING: In a L-N-G
system, ensure the system neutral is connected to the

incoming white wire only. G is exclusively reserved for
electrical ground and B is always hot (Line).
d.
Once the incoming power is connected to the butt splice
connectors, push the fiber glass wire covering over the
butt splice, and push over incoming cable to within 1" of
cord grip. NOTE: The fiberglass covering protects the
wires in case of contact with the ballast and full covering
of the incoming wire is critical.
e.
Once the electrical connections are made, ensure the
supplied cord grip is properly tightened on power cable.
f.
Reattached the ballast housing cover by tightening the
(4) #10 screws.
C.
LAMPING
Open the optical housing by manually releasing each of the glass
clamp draw latches. This process should be accomplished without
the use of tools! Install the lamp that was supplied with the
luminaire by Carolina High Mast. The lamp shall be hand tightened
to approximately 35 in*lb. Care should be taken to ensure clean
hands and/or gloves are used when handling the lamp and optical
surface. NOTE: Carolina High Mast has designed the UltaSpot
around a specific set of high performance, energy efficient lamps.
Lamps shall not be substituted without written authorization from
CHM. Close the glass door and reattach the glass support latches.
Ensure the wire from the glass latch has properly seated in the strike
plate and that all latches are properly engaged. (NOTE: If the glass is
not properly sealed, dirt and contaminants will seep into the optical
reducing overall luminaire efficiency)
AIMING PREPARATION
Prior to aiming of the flood lighting fixtures, it is critical to ensure the
proper distributions are located in the appropriate location on the support
structure. The ballast housing will include a large label on the field side of
the housing indicating the lighting distribution (e.g. N, M or W).
Distributions should be matched to the supplied aiming array illustrating
the fixture array, aiming angles and specific distribution.
DEGREE AIMING
The UltaSpot is provided with a horizontal and vertical aiming indicator.
These aiming indicators can be used for general aiming indication. NOTE: If
precision aiming is required, the target aiming process should be followed.
Contact CHM for detailed target aiming instructions.
In the pre-aimed configuration, both the horizontal and vertical aiming
indicators with be marked with the appropriate aiming settings. Adjust the
luminaire until the aiming mark aligns with the aiming bolt. IF the fixture is
not pre-aimed from the factory, follow the aiming steps below.
