Stage 4: Distraction Stage
Teach your dog to stay in the safe zone even with distractions introduced
outside of the fence.
1. Keeping the same fence settings as the Stimulation Cue stage, keep your
dog on a leash and introduce distractions outside of the boundary area.
Examples of distractions can be people crossing from the Safe Zone past the
boundary or children playing outside the boundary, etc. Make sure these
distractions are controlled as much as possible to prevent confusing your
dog.
2. If your dog passes the boundary line, let the fence system correct your dog
(or correct yourself by pressing CONT until back inside the fence,
depending on setting) and lead your dog back to the Safe Zone.
3. If your dog does not pass the boundary, praise your dog (treats optional).
4. After several successful sessions, drop the leash and allow it to drag on the
ground while training your dog. This requires a leash that does not extend.
5. Train in the Distraction Stage until your dog consistently stays within the
Safe Zone while distractions are introduced. It generally takes 1-7
consecutive days of training, at least 3 times a day to complete the
Distraction Stage. It may take longer to train in this stage because
distractions can be strong stimulants for dogs and your dog will have to
learn the boundary while excited.
