BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino
Technical Note: Impact of Supporting HTML and Rich-content Email Messages
Overview
®
BlackBerry
Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6 supports users sending and receiving MIME/HTML
®
®
and IBM
Lotus Notes
Rich Text email messages using BlackBerry devices that are running
®
BlackBerry
Device Software version 4.5 or later. By default, support for MIME/HTML and IBM Lotus
Notes Rich Text email messages is turned on. You can turn off this feature using the BlackBerry
Manager.
This document outlines the expected impact of supporting MIME/HTML and IBM Lotus Notes Rich
Text email messages on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This feature might cause the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server to use increased amounts of virtual memory and CPU resources. The BlackBerry
Enterprise Server process (nbes.exe) runs as a task on an IBM
organization's environment. In a 32-bit operating system, the addressable virtual memory for a
process is limited to 2 GB. If a process tries to reserve memory that exceeds this limit, the process
stops responding.
Load test conditions
Load tests were run to determine the impact of supporting MIME/HTML and IBM Lotus Notes Rich
Text email messages on BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6. The load tests were
conducted under certain load conditions; the results experienced in your organization's environment
might be different.
One set of load tests used MIME/HTML email messages only. Another set of load tests used IBM
Lotus Notes Rich Text email messages only. During each load test, messages were sent to 2000
BlackBerry device users.

The message load included messages with inline embedded images, but the BlackBerry devices did
not request the images.
The message load was applied to an environment that used BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1
SP6 with support for MIME/HTML and IBM Lotus Notes Rich Text email messages turned on. The
same message load was applied to an environment with BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1
SP6 with support for MIME/HTML and IBM Lotus Notes Rich Text email messages turned off, and the
results were compared. The load tests were run for 8 hours. Measurements were taken for the last 4
hours of the load tests.
