When MIME/HTML email messages were sent and received, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server

increased its use of virtual memory by 164 MB, and it used 92% more CPU resources.

When IBM Lotus Notes Rich Text email messages were sent and received, the BlackBerry Enterprise

Server increased its use of virtual memory by 54 MB, and it used 7% more CPU resources.

Conclusions

Monitor the virtual memory that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses. Use the Windows

Performance Monitor or other tools to view the counter <server>\Process(NBES)\Virtual Bytes. If your

organization's environment uses a 32-bit operating system, and the virtual memory use of the NBES

process of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server approaches the 2 GB limit, you should take measures to

reduce the use of this resource.

You can manage the use of virtual memory in your organization's environment by upgrading the

operating system that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server runs on to a 64-bit operating system. The

BlackBerry Enterprise Server can use up to 4 GB of virtual memory address space instead of the 2

GB that a 32-bit operating system provides. IBM Lotus Domino Version 7.0.2 and later support 64-bit

operating systems.

You can reduce the amount of virtual memory that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses by

upgrading the IBM Lotus Domino server that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server runs on to version

8.0.1 or later. IBM supports the use of a mixed-mode environment with IBM Lotus Domino version 8

servers and IBM Lotus Domino version 7 servers running in the same environment.

If the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses an unacceptable amount of CPU resources and virtual

memory, you can use the BlackBerry Manager to turn off support for inline images in MIME/HTML

email messages and IBM Lotus Notes Rich Text email messages to reduce the amount of resource

consumption. If the BlackBerry Enterprise Server continues to use an unacceptable amount of

resources, you can use the BlackBerry Manager to turn off support for MIME/HTML and IBM Lotus

Notes Rich Text email messages. If you turn off support for this feature, BlackBerry Enterprise Server

version 4.1 SP6 uses a similar amount of CPU resources and virtual memory as BlackBerry

Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP5.

While you evaluate the use of virtual memory in your organization's environment, note that antivirus

software and nightly state database maintenance activities, while underway, can contribute to higher
