• Green wood / wet wood

• Logs are too large

• Not enough primary air

• Insufficient draft

• Too much draft

• Excessive draft

• Flue is cold

• Insufficient draught

• Poor quality wood

Action Recommend

Use hardwood logs with a maximum

moisture content of 20%

Use kindling and small logs to start the

fire and once established use split logs

Open air control

Check the flue is not obstructed

Reduce the air control

Install a draft stabiliser

Burn paper and kindling to increase
