Installation & Operation
IOTA/1 - Spherical Compass, Built-in type
Range of Delivery:
Spherical compass IOTA/1 (white:#36206w, black:36206s or German BSH type tested:
#36206b), anti dazzle hood (not #37206b), separate illumination element to be glued to the
glass dome.
Compass Location:
A minimum save distance to any magnetic iron of 50 cm is necessary on yachts. In case of
professional use there may be different national regulations which, in addition, may depend
on the type of the vessel and its length, the region of voyage. The installation of the compass
inside a magnetic iron superstructure is not allowed. IOTA/1 can be installed in walls from
horizontal to vertical inclination.
Mounting:
Cut a circular hole of 145 mm
. Insert the compass and fix it by non-magnetic screws (not
included in range of delivery). Flange-
164 mm, bolthole-
153 mm. The hood is orientated
top, resp. the marking lables are down.
Illumination:
There is a watertight light element attached (12 VDC or 24 VDC as ordered) to be glued to
the glass dome. Choose a position allowing comfortable brightness according to situation
aboard. Use a rheostat dimmer of 500 VA if required.
Operation, Reading of Heading:
The aft lubber line is to read at the vertical card. The fore lubber line is to read the horizontal
vaulted scale. The ahead reading is allowed for professional use only because of the contrary
turning direction of vertical compass card. So watch turning direction of vertical card when
reading the back lubber mark! The lubber marks left and right are for more convenient
reading from steering positions at the side of the compass. The helmsman has to add or
subtract 45° to get the right heading. Note that you have to apply the local variation and to
carry out compass adjustment to get the true heading as to found in the sea charts!
Accessories:
B+C corrector magazines #18150.
Compass Adjustment:
Compass adjustment is to compensate the magnetic influence of iron parts of the vessel.
This should be done by a professional compass adjuster only. They can be found in each
port of the world. Further details are described in: HANDBOOK OF COMPASS
ADJUSTMENT, Pub. 226, U.S. Defense Mapping Office.
